Replacement of Two Madison County Bridges

What was the Challenge?

The full replacement of two bridges, County Route 99 (Beaver Creek Road) over West Creek and County Route 25 (Oxbow Road) over Oneida Creek in Madison County, New York, were completed on an accelerated schedule with limitations on funding.  The existing structures were replaced with pre-stressed concrete beam superstructures supported on drilled micro pile and cast-in-place concrete abutments.  The two structures were the first two bridges in the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Region 2 to be constructed under the BridgeNY program.

How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?

To meet the accelerated schedule, B&L identified potential roadblocks and dealt with them early in the project development. The cultural resource package was submitted early in the project, understanding that this review typically takes significant time and can hold up design approval. B&L submitted NYSDOT details for integral abutments during preliminary design, which were reviewed and approved by NYSDOT, this reduced the chances for major design changes late in the project. B&L also coordinated with the environmental permitting agencies and the utility companies to ensure that there would be no delays to begin construction.

Why was the project a success?

Both bridge replacements were progressed through the Locally Administered Federal Aid program and let for construction within 12 months of the project being initiated.  B&L worked closely with Madison County and NYSDOT to ensure that the project continued to progress through the process efficiently, while developing a replacement alternative that could be constructed within the BridgeNY award.
