Ardsley High School Track and Field Improvements
What Was the Challenge?
Ardsley Union Free School District sought to modernize its aging athletic complex, which included a natural grass field, an outdated track surface, stormwater management issues, and athletic programming that required updates or had not been previously accommodated. The District needed a comprehensive redesign that would enhance safety, expand overall facility usability, and create a high-quality, long-lasting athletic facility that meets modern performance standards and supports a wide range of student activities.
How did Barton & Loguidice Provide a Solution?
In partnership with Fuller D’Angelo, B&L provided full site engineering services to redesign and revitalize the athletic fields, track, stormwater systems, and supporting athletic facilities. B&L’s work included grading and layout for all major site improvements, assessment of existing track conditions, and development of alternatives ranging from surface recoating to full-depth reconstruction.
The project converts the natural grass field to a high-performance synthetic turf system using a non-infill surface, an emerging system in the region selected by the District to stay ahead of the curve. The District was particularly interested in the system’s potential for enhanced on-field consistency, improved natural-grass-like play, reduced maintenance needs, and limited particulate migration. To support an informed selection, B&L conducted a review that included technical discussions with the manufacturer, evaluation of performance specifications, and conversations with users who have the system already installed. While the technology is still new to the area, B&L ensured all safety and performance requirements were met, including incorporating a shock pad to improve player protection. Four new Musco lighting fixtures further extend field usability.
A key component of the design is a new subsurface stormwater detention/retention system integrated beneath the turf field. B&L evaluated the existing stormwater infrastructure and reviewed the geotechnical report provided by the District to confirm proper system function. Additional improvements include refined circulation routes that support event operations, site amenities, and coordination with future building additions to maintain seamless campus functionality.
Construction was phased over the summer and into the school year. B&L worked closely with the District and the contractor to maintain safe access to key campus areas and open portions of the site as they were completed, minimizing disruption to school operations.
Why Was This Project a Success?
The updated design transforms Ardsley High School’s athletic facilities into a modern, durable, and safe sports complex that significantly improves usability, accessibility, and resilience. The synthetic turf field and upgraded track provide year-round, consistent performance, while enhanced lighting, drainage, and circulation features ensure a better experience for athletes and students.
The new field safely accommodates multiple sports including football, soccer, lacrosse, and flag football, and meets all NFHS standards. Additional track and field event areas further expand athletic programming. The comprehensive and coordinated approach creates a future-ready facility that will support school athletics for years to come.
