JCC Athletic Court Redevelopment

What Was the Challenge?

The Springfield Jewish Community Center (SJCC) sought to modernize and expand its outdoor recreation facilities as part of a broader campuswide improvement initiative. The existing athletic courts were aging, limited in functionality, and no longer met the Center’s programming needs. SJCC required high-quality, durable, and accessible sports courts that would support year-round use and reflect the Center’s long-term vision for improved community recreation.

How did Barton & Loguidice Provide a Solution?

Working closely with SJCC leadership and Architectural Insights, Inc., B&L developed a comprehensive master plan for the campus and advanced the priority improvements into full design and construction documentation. As part of Phase 1, B&L designed eight new full-depth asphalt pickleball courts—two of which are designated for championship and tournament play, along with one new basketball court. The courts were completed with new surfacing, equipment, lighting, perimeter fencing, seating, and landscaping to create a welcoming, flexible, and long-lasting recreational environment.

B&L provided surveying, site planning, grading, and layout for the new courts while improving site accessibility with ADA-compliant paths and walkways connecting the parking areas to the new recreation facilities. Construction was completed in August 2025, delivering modern courts that align with the Center’s long-term campus vision.

Why Was This Project a Success?

The newly constructed pickleball and basketball courts offer the Springfield Jewish community high-quality recreational amenities that enhance programming flexibility, improve playability, and support active use throughout the year. The project successfully transformed outdated courts into durable, attractive, and accessible facilities that strengthen the SJCC’s role as a community hub and support long-term recreational growth.
