Park Road Bridge over Enfield Creek

What was the Challenge?

Robert H. Treman State Park’s existing fordway crossing of Enfield Creek was undermined and needed replacing. The fordway style of crossing limited access to the southern portion of the park, as it needed to be closed during the winter or during times of high flow.

How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?

The crossing was replaced by a single-span bridge structure that provided improved access for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. Aside from allowing year-round access across the creek, removal of the fordway also allowed for the stabilization of the channel and bed of Enfield Creek. Removal of the fordway provided an aquatic connection to the reach of Enfield Creek which had previously been cut off.

Why was the project a success?

The bridge provides safe, year-round access across Enfield Creek for park patrons, maintenance crews, as well as emergency services. The natural stream channel was restored through the 380-foot stretch of Enfield Creek; this returned aquatic organism passage to the reach and enhanced the aquatic habitat. In the spring following construction, fish were already observed moving past the bridge upstream.
