Old Route 17 Bridge Replacements

What was the challenge?

The biggest challenge on this project was the proximity of the two bridges to each other, the steep grade of the stream between them and how this affected the hydraulic function of the site.  This caused high velocities that eroded the existing concrete channel.  In addition, the capacity of the upstream structure was undersized and had led to flooding of the road.

How did Barton & Loguidice find a solution?

B&L developed a comprehensive model to evaluate the hydraulic function of the site.  We collaborated with the County to develop a unique solution that increased hydraulic capacity, increased durability, and controlled potential high velocities that could damage the site.

Why was the project a success?

The project was a success because it involved a team approach with the Client.  We used natural, readily available materials that will reduce maintenance for the County moving forward.
