Kirk Park Kayak Launch

What Was the Challenge?

The City of Syracuse looked to enhance recreational access to Onondaga Creek by adding a new kayak and canoe launch at the Kirk Park overlook platform. Located adjacent to the Syracuse Creekwalk and trailhead parking area near Onondaga Creek Boulevard, the project required careful design to ensure accessibility, safety, and integration into the creekside environment.

How Did Barton & Loguidice Provide a Solution?

Barton & Loguidice designed an accessible concrete ramp and launch landing to facilitate safe and easy put-in and take-out of carry-in watercraft. The design incorporates a combination of natural quarried stone and concrete retaining walls along the creekside slope, providing a stable and visually appealing structure. To further support boaters and kayakers, handle rungs and a landing ledge were integrated into the concrete walls. The existing overlook platform will remain in place, with a new access gate connecting the launch to the platform. Additionally, the riparian corridor was enhanced with native, low-growing shrubs to preserve creek views and support ecological health.

Why Was This Project a Success?

This project successfully addressed the need for improved recreational water access while integrating natural and durable design elements that complement the surrounding environment. The new kayak and canoe launch will connect the community to Onondaga Creek, enhance the user experience along the Syracuse Creekwalk, and promote safe, accessible water-based recreation. By maintaining open views of Kirk Park and incorporating native landscaping, the design balances functionality with environmental stewardship.
