Barker Village Hall & Public Library

What Was the Challenge?

After a devastating fire in January 2019 destroyed the Village of Barker’s historic Village Hall and public library, the community faced the challenge of rebuilding a facility that could honor the site’s legacy while serving modern needs. The original building, constructed in 1900 as a railroad station, held significant historical and cultural value, making its replacement sensitive and complex.

How Did Barton & Loguidice Provide a Solution?

Barton & Loguidice designed a 5,000-square-foot municipal facility to replace the lost Village Hall and public library. The replacement structure, designed as a single-story, wood-framed building, was designed to meet the Village’s operational and community needs. The building program included administrative offices for the Village, a library with a private study room and librarian’s office, and shared amenities such as a staff/employee unisex restroom and breakroom. To accommodate public use, the facility also included separate men’s and women’s restrooms. By designing the new structure to be located on the original site, B&L honored the community’s commitment to preserving the historical significance of the location.

Why Was This Project a Success?

The new Village Hall and public library successfully restored a vital community resource while respecting the historical importance of the site. B&L’s design provided a functional, modern space that met the needs of both Village operations and library patrons. The completion of the project and its grand opening in July 2024 marked a significant milestone for the Village of Barker, symbolizing resilience and a commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing the future.
