Wiltse Hill Road Culvert Replacement

What was the challenge?

Otsquago Creek had caused regular flooding to residential properties in the Van Hornesville hamlet and the downstream Owen D. Young Central School grounds.  This was primarily caused by the undersized concrete and stone arch carrying Wiltse Hill Road.

How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?

Herkimer County retained B&L to design a new crossing to address the hydraulic needs while providing a new structure capable of delivering a 75-year service life. A detailed HEC-RAS hydraulic analysis was completed to size the new opening and it was apparent that a bridge-sized structure was needed to accommodate the flows.

Why was the project a success?

Careful attention was paid to match the new bridge to the local character, therefore B&L designed a 32’ span, precast concrete arch with colored and formlined wingwalls, headwalls, and decorative columns.
