Rehoboth Beach Hydrogeologic Support

What Was the Challenge?

The City of Rehoboth Beach needed to comply with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) water allocation permit requirements for its municipal production wells. These requirements focus on understanding and mitigating potential well-to-well interference and the risk of seawater intrusion into drinking water aquifers, which are critical concerns for a coastal community relying on groundwater from a shared aquifer system. The City required technical hydrogeologic guidance to demonstrate regulatory compliance and protect long-term water supply reliability.

How did Barton & Loguidice Provide a Solution?

Since 2015, B&L’s hydrogeologists have supported Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF) and the City by conducting the hydrogeologic evaluations necessary to meet DNREC permitting requirements. This work focuses on analyzing potential interference effects between City wells and other nearby wells screened in the same aquifer, as well as assessing the risk of seawater intrusion resulting from permitted groundwater withdrawals. Through monitoring and reporting, water level data evaluation, geochemical analyses, aquifer characterization, and regulatory coordination, B&L has helped the City satisfy permit requirements and maintain a sustainable groundwater supply.

Why Was This Project a Success?

B&L’s ongoing hydrogeologic support helps to ensure that the City remains in full compliance with DNREC water allocation regulations while safeguarding drinking water resources in the area. By proactively evaluating interference and seawater intrusion risks, the City can manage its wells responsibly, protect nearby water users, and maintain a resilient and sustainable municipal water supply.
