Sustainability starts at home, the office, the job site, and on the drawing board.

We believe that technology can make the world a better place. As technical professionals, our education and training is rooted in sustainability, resiliency, and conservation. These values drive us and give us purpose. B&L is committed to conducting our business in a way that minimizes our carbon footprint, contributes to the welfare of our community, and preserves our natural resources.

This holds true in our office operations, as well as the way we approach the projects we undertake. B&L’s Green Team is responsible for developing and executing sustainable practices within our own business operations, such as: installing high efficiency lighting and automatic shut-offs in our offices; encouraging carpooling and biking to work; purchasing sustainable office products; using renewable energy sources; preserving water resources; and facilitating reduction, reuse, and recycling throughout our offices. In 2018 we were awarded the Blue Ribbon Recycler Certification from the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) for our commitment to waste reduction, organics separation, and recycling in all of our work spaces.

The most sustainable approach to any project is realized at the intersection of that project’s environmental, social, and financial considerations.  From this triple bottom line approach we can integrate sustainability into our clients’ projects through such practices as:
    •    Helping our clients find funding for environmental improvements
    •    Using asset management techniques to extend the lifecycle of an asset and reduce costs
    •    Improving energy performance and efficiency
    •    Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
    •    Using recycled materials
    •    Developing waste reduction strategies for communities
    •    Designing combined heat and power systems
    •    Preserving and restoring habitat, and
    •    Maximizing open space.

B&L is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and has experience with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. Our team includes 16 LEED-accredited design professionals who are committed to the principles of sustainable design.

Each of our design disciplines have unique sustainable practices that they incorporate into their designs, from incorporating innovative stormwater solutions into our site designs to encouraging active transportation in communities, to designing alternative energy facilities. We’d be happy to discuss improvements in sustainability for your project.
