Presenting on: UV Disinfection – Open Channel vs. Non-Contact Equipment Applications
Effluent disinfection via ultraviolet (UV) light continues to grow in New York’s wastewater industry as existing chemical disinfection systems age and State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) requirements become more stringent. Design engineers and facility operators have many options to choose from during the UV disinfection equipment selection process. This presentation will focus on open channel and non-contact UV disinfection equipment alternatives, highlight critical design and operational considerations, and explore case studies from recent capital projects in the Village of Malone, Village of Potsdam and Town of Niskayuna.

The presentation will be about how OCWA has provided efficient management and operation by consolidating over 20 water systems including a major wholesale supply into our operations. Each consolidation has been evaluated and treated differently: some systems required extensive repairs, others were nearly new. Each consolidation required review and evaluation of assets and employee abilities - not all were taken with each consolidation. Issues that were dealt with were debt service, different water rates, several different employee unions, numerous government entities and regulatory hurdles. The result is a very efficient, regional system that serves over 500,000 people in five counties of Central New York.
