Waterford Senior Center Design & Build

What was the Challenge?

The Town of Waterford Senior Center had resided in an old church facility for many years. Over time, this facility became increasingly deteriorated and in need of significant repair that was cost prohibitive. As an alternate to the expensive repair and code-compliant upgrade of the old church, the town decided to construct a new senior center at a different location. The town retained Barton & Loguidice to evaluate the old church facility and ultimately design and oversee the construction of the new center.

How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?

B&L designed the new Waterford Senior Center as a 3,200 sq. ft. single-story facility to function as both a senior center and community facility that could accommodate community functions and events. To reduce the overall project costs, the facility was constructed on a vacant parcel owned by the Town of Waterford on the shoreline of the Hudson River. The design incorporated a commercial kitchen, dining area, community room, meeting area, director’s office, ADA-compliant restrooms, and utility spaces. The project included a new off-street parking area, ADA-accessible entrance and a raised patio overlooking a large lawn leading to the shore of the Hudson River. The design allows the facility to be used for both indoor and outdoor activities and accentuates the natural aesthetics of the riverfront location.

Why was the project a success?

The completed project has provided the Town of Waterford with a new senior center that is energy efficient, and code compliant with full ADA accessibility. The facility enhances the community landscape, providing an inviting space for community events and programs. In addition, the unique location provides the scenic backdrop of the Hudson River, which promotes the historic heritage of Waterford.
